A city of about a million people, Port Elizabeth lies on the south coast of the country roughly half way between Cape Town and Durban. The city is most often visited as either the starting or finishing point of the famous Garden Route drive along the coast, and as such is a place that people tend to pass through rather than travel to.

The city offers plenty of historic attractions to keep you occupied, including a number of great museums to local culture, but the main reason for hanging around in P.E. is the chance to get out and about the open air.

Top outdoor spots in Port Elizabeth include the excellent beaches of Algoa Bay around the city centre and the chance to surf the famous tube waves on Jeffrey's Bay. If you want to get back to nature, the Shamwari Game Reserve inland from Port Elizabeth offers an opportunity to see the big five animals on a safari, while the famous Addo Elephant sanctuary lets you get up close and personal with a large collection of surprisingly big pachyderms.

The Garden Route from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town is one of the main reasons for coming to the city, but with all that there is to see and do here, it makes sense to stay for a few days in order to make the most of your visit.
