The largest town on the Garden Route, George is in many ways the point at which the more magical part of this stunning drive begins, as it is here that you actually pick up the coastal road after travelling overland from Cape Town.
Located in the Western Cape Region, close to Oudtshoorn, George lies between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean. The area around the city is geared towards forestry, and the local scenery is truly beautiful.
The main attractions to keep you in George for a few days are the stunning and very safe trekking on offer in the mountains, where, especially in the summer, the cooler weather and fresh air make an incredibly welcome change from the high temperatures and humidity on the coast.
The beaches around George are perfect for sun worshippers, and those for whom hiking is a dirty word, the miles of quiet golden sand facing the warm inviting waters of the sea will be the perfect place to spend time soaking up the sun.
In George itself, there are several excellent museums covering the long history of the Cape Province, and by visiting them, you can get a genuine insight into the struggle and heartbreak that have combined to create the out and out resilience of the South Africa of today.
