Lying on the Indian Ocean Coast of South Africa about a third of the way from Port Elizabeth to Durban, East London is a popular destination for people who want to drive an extended version of the famous Garden Route from Cape Town.
For travellers who choose to take on the challenges of the extra distance on the garden route, the benefits are enormous, with some of the best scenery in the country on offer, as well as beautiful secluded beaches, and small pleasant towns where you can get to see a much less pretentious and more African side to the country than you do in the main tourist centres.
East London is a medium sized town that is not particularly geared towards the tourist, although there is still plenty to see and do there. There are a number of museums covering the history of the settlement, as well as a surprising number of art galleries where you can see paintings of the beautiful local area by local people, and even pick up some great reminders of your trip.
Inland from East London, there are a couple of small game reserves to visit should you want to see some wildlife, otherwise, you can head further along the Indian Ocean Coast to Durban - although this is a fairly long drive.
