The judicial capital of South Africa, Bloemfontein is a modern graceful city roughly in the centre of the country. Home to around a quarter of a million people, Bloemfontein's friendliness and relative peace makes it a popular place to visit for people wanting to leave the urban chaos of Johannesburg for a few days. Although a little of the beaten track for the majority of tourists in the country, there is plenty for visitors to see in Bloemfontein.
Because of the relative wealth of the city combined with its comparatively small size, Bloemfontein is one of the richest cities in Africa, and offers a huge range of public amenities to make your time there very pleasant indeed. There are dozens of important historic features to see, including the famous President Brand Street, where most of Bloemfontein's state buildings and the national Supreme Court are amongst the most graceful buildings you will see. There are also a number of excellent museums of both South Africa's recent colonial history, and also the older indigenous people and their colourful traditions.
Away from the tree-lined streets of the city, there are several national parks within driving distance of Bloemfontein, as well as the impressive Drakensburg Mountains that rise to the south.
